South Australian Primary, Secondary and Tertiary students portray their ideas about refugees.

This is a stunningly visual exhibition of posters by young aspiring artists from South Australian primary, secondary and tertiary education institutions. As part of a contribution to Australian & SA Refugee Week & International World Refugee Day, students were invited to visually portray their ideas about refugees in the Australian context. This is now the eleventh year of this acclaimed annual art project for SA students of all ages, with schools, teachers and parents applauding the opportunity that this project gives to students to be able to engage with this topic. Many schools have integrated this project into their arts, design or social studies curriculum for Term One each year.

In 2022 three hundred and thirty entries were received from forty schools and educational institutions that participated in this poster project which was coordinated by MRC Arts on behalf of the SA Refugee Week Committee and in partnership with the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, UniSA. The project is supported by the Office of the Minister for Education.

Seventy-nine of these entries were chosen to comprise this exhibition to reflect a cross-section of the work of our young artists from all participating schools and across all age levels.

The result is a striking and stimulating collection of large posters describing cultural diversity and the refugee experience as people escape from troubled places and seek a peaceful, safe and welcoming home. The images are powerful, thoughtful, imaginative and highly creative. The project gives young people a voice to help define what they think about refugees and their place in Australian society.
