Exhibition Description
Emiko Artemis is a contemporary visual artist working across media with a focus on performance and photo media. Emiko's exhibition explores her current focus on language and gender and her installation seeks to invite viewers to inhabit a world of her own making. In her installation, "Return Home, Womyn and Womb", Emiko invites us to question what home is, how do women navigate our world and what role does the concept of womb have in today's contemporary life. Can the womb be a metaphorical space that we can return to, heal, and emerge anew?
Artist Biography
Emiko Artemis is a visual artist working across media. She is interested in ideas of human agency in the modern age- how we connect with each other, with nature and with the objects of modern life. Emiko uses ideas of performance, ritual and body covering to explore how the movement of the body in space affects our interpretation of our boundaries of flesh, psyche and the external world. In 2012 Emiko explored in her PhD the medicalisation of women's minds and bodies and she has continued to be driven by this expanded theme in her work since then. Emiko has received numerous awards, including the university medal for her honours year work, the Manning Valley art prize 2d category award in 2012 and Hatched graduate showcase PICA , WA .
